Following the wind-down of the growing-season, the irrigation districts of Central Oregon reduce the river flow in the Upper Deschutes from Wickiup Reservoir to Bend to refill the reservoir for the following irrigation season.
The Deschutes Basin Board of Control (DBBC) have partnered with the Deschutes River Conservancy, Deschutes Redbands Chapter of Trout Unlimited, Coalition for the Deschutes and dozens of volunteers from the community to roll up their sleeves in a collaborative fish rescue. But we are in need of volunteers! We need you!
The effort involves collecting fish stranded in pools along a side channel of the Deschutes River near Lava Island Falls and relocating them to the main river channel.
The only catch is this: the date of the rescue is a moving target until a few days prior to the rescue. The rescue will occur 3-6 days after the irrigation districts shut-off their water. The uncertainty comes from not knowing the definitive shut-off dates at this time this far in advance, and the unpredictable rate by which these side channels drain after river flows are decreased.
But we can say this: come join us for a rescue someday between October 12th and October 19th. More information will be provided as the date approaches.
We prefer volunteers come for either a morning or afternoon shift. But as always, passion helpers can stay all day or as long as their lunch break will allow. Food, water, coffee and snacks will be provided.
